My mother lives in France and has for many, many years. Since I try to see her at least once a year – this means I have been to France many, many times. One would think that, by now, I would know a few French words (um…actually, no…I mean…non.) I’m quite insecure about my ability to speak French, so other than a few basics –
- Comment allez-vous? (How are you?)
- S’il vous plait. (Please)
- Je m’appelle Jamie (My name is Jamie)
…I pretty much fumble my way around the country. I point, draw, act-out everything from “Can you please tell me where the ladies room is?” to “How much are these shoes?”
I’ve decided that the next time I go to France…I’m going prepared. At least, fashionably prepared.
I’ve got my “Please forgive me before I attempt to speak your language” sweater, my Chanel earrings and my go-to Celine sandals.
I bought this ring.
and this handbag.
And, I know this shirt will win everyone over. (similar)
I’m going to be so prepared, I may even have enough confidence to belt out some new French words…”Je voudrais acheter tout le monde dans la salle un verre!”
Oops- I think I just bought a round of drinks for everyone in the room! NON!…NON!
You look great and French ………. Don’t worry about speaking it !
Best advice to American travellers — swallow hard and say it anyway in the local language, don’t worry about how it sounds. Remember that most Europeans feel the same way about speaking English, but practically everyone has studied it. Saying almost anything will break the ice and everyone can work it out from there (one way or the other!).
Comme Paris, tu est tres belle, especialement avec les belles chemises. Ils sont si bon!
umm…something about nice shirts….(?) Merci!
LOVE the sweater —– almost as much as I love this blog! I like its international range, the fact that you’re doing men’s fashion, too, enjoy the interviews and especially, I like the very funny wit of the text.
Love, love, love the sweaters! Looks like you just stepped off a NY runway!
How do you say “Ahhh….shucks….” in French?
Love The Ring
