I’m pretty sure I haven’t talked about this on the blog yet, but my hubby and I are in the process of selling our existing home and building a new one … an urban condo, actually, that is part of a really fantastic mixed-use project my husband is involved in. HEY ~ this is life when you’re married to a real estate guy. You just roll with it! Anyhoo ~ I’ll be sharing more on that, probably via video, in the months to come … so when I’m not working (I mean blogging which so many people don’t understand is actually 24-7 work), social media-ing and/or working on the blog shop, I’m throwing away/donating and packing up years of our life in our existing home, making it show ready for agents to bring potential buyers by and checking daily on the progress of our new site. #WorldsLongestRunOnSentence
Nothing yet is finished. Everything is basically in the middle of their completion. For example our front door was just hung, however there’s much more to do with it before it’s considered finished.
The flooring and titles are just being laid and installed ~ still needing to be grouted. The cabinets we designed are coming in, waiting for us to decide on the appropriate hardware and their placement.
The sinks and faucets are up and running and some of our fun lighting is starting to make an appearance, like this newly hung fixture in what is going to be my office.
And huge outdoor decks are the next big task to be addressed and they will ultimately be finished and wrap completely around the exterior columns of the building. When will all this be done?? … I ask DAILY.
Uggh ~ there’s SO much going on and so many critical decisions that have to be made in order to move on to the next step, it is immensely overwhelming. I’m trying really hard, though, to just take a deep breath and not get too overwhelmed with the process and/or overwhelm everyone else with my thoughts and opinions. You see, this is not my first rodeo as we’ve built a custom home before.
BUT this time it is important to me to make triply sure that THE MOST important room in our new home is properly being addressed. I’m talking about, of course, MY, oops … I mean our closet and I’m not being shy about my feelings on it. ‘Bossy’ is actually how my husband has described my behavior.
Tee Hee!
So, tell me friends ~ have you built a custom home before? What went right? … what went wrong? … and most importantly, do you think you’d ever do again???
Can’t wait to see the final product! What are those green dots on the wall?
Those are brackets/spacers that hold the tiles in place before they get grouted, Beth. I think I’ll show final product via video and share some of the things we learned on this process. (a few design tricks I didn’t even know existed)
Looking good. Can’t wait to see the final product.
I’ll invite you over, GF!
Oh gosh no (I made that statement G rated for the comments, but it was R rated in my head)—I’d never want to do it again. It’s so time consuming and crazy! But of course it’s worth it in the end. But give me one already finished and I’m a happy camper! As long as there is plenty of closet space–ha ha!
XOXO

I’m with you, Sister!
Spectacular!
I would do it in a minute with my amazingly creative sister – Jan Bernson!
She is THE BEST, Rudi!
She is. Your new urban life looks amazing – I desire a tag-along invite with Jan to toast completion!
come on down! (* I want to include Jan in my video!)
Is the new project in Santa Fe? Love the ring!
Uptown ABQ!
WOW! Looks fabulous! I built a custom home when I was single. The choices and things that can go wrong!!!! I sold it in 2003 and made a nice profit. I married in 2004 and chose a home that was designed and built by an architect. I am now in the middle of a kitchen remodel! Not as stressful as what you are dealing with. Loving your light fixture…so DIOR!
That light fixture is my second fave thing in the condo. (First being the closet!!)
Yes – there’s so much that can go wrong. One mis-spec’d item can screw up so much.
That front door though! So excited to see the totally finished condo. You have amazing taste,my friend!
Just getting “your” room ready for you, GF!
I am so excited for you! Your home is going to be so beautiful!!!!! Where did you get that mug? I need to buy that for my boss! hahahha! (she is not bossy at all, but that mug is sooooo cute!)
I linked to the mug in the post, Kim … but now it looks like it might be sold out. (sad face)
Good for you! I know with your style it will be awesome sauce!
Thanks so much, Tina! Glad to know someone else says awesome sauce!
How fun will it be to live right in the city if you’re within walking distance of restaurants, theaters, & museums !
I know, Sherri! I’m stoked. I’ve always lived in big city but my husband prefers more of the mountains (where we are now) … but we are *this* close to moving!
Now you see we differ on this Jamie. I love anything to do with building work! I know I’m crazy, my Husband tells me often enough hahaha.
Love your outfit by the way & that mug is fabulous. I think I need one too 😉
Please share your insights, especially on the closet design.
We will probably start building in 2018 and I keep changing my mind what it is that I want.
We even considered not building, selling the lot and moving to Santa Fe or Sedona instead. Decisions, decisions
Hi Sabine! How exciting! … although I know how complex and involved all of this is. Regarding our closet, (and we are not quite in the space yet and I’ll be doing a video on it all early next year) I did have a subcontractor build ours although some of the parts and pieces could have, perhaps, been purchased at a place like The Container Store … I am quite pleased with how it all turned out. We designed a more “showcase” cabinet to display special jewelry pieces and handbags with glass and lighting and it even has a pull-out foot stool.
Thinking its the last home we will be in so decided to make some of the parts of it memorable and highlight our life together. Hope this helps. XO – Jamie
