La Fonda on the Plaza is the oldest and, perhaps, most recognized hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock (or attempted to find a parking space around there)  then you are also aware that La Fonda recently went through the huge undertaking of remodeling their guest rooms – something that had not occurred since 1929.

This meant replacing windows, sound-proofing, adding insulation to the walls, as well as plumbing and electrical replacements. Amazingly, La Fonda remained open during this entire project.

The final result is an spectacular amalgamation of OLD and NEW:

lf headboards

Each room has their own unique headboards, individually painted by local artists.  The artists were provided motifs and color palettes inspired by the original designer, Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, to work from ~ however they were allowed to improvise the designs by drawing on their own experiences and understanding.

What I found interesting was that La Fonda took some of the original headboards (where the frame was no longer usable, but the headboards were still beautiful) and hung them in the hallways as wall art.

LaFonda HotelWhen the old carpeting was removed, workers found original colored concrete dating back to 1929.  There were green, orange and red colored concrete floors and if they were in good condition, then they remained.  If they were in need of repair, then wooden floors were added.

Throughout all of the rooms, you’ll find restored cast iron chandeliers, colcha embroidered window coverings, La Fonda’s historical collection of original and new artwork,  and stunning hand-nailed tin mirrors…

It is obvious that careful thought went into every aspect of this project. With the renovation now complete…you must GO SEE IT!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if you had family coming in from out of town and they stayed at La Fonda on the Plaza?  You could meet up with them and everyone could go shopping at the Shops at La Fonda.   I’m talkin’ about some of THE very best shopping in Santa Fe!

Then all of you could go to La Plazuela Restaurant to enjoy their famous green chili burgers and margaritas… yummy.
