Does anyone else botch the pronunciation of designer names…or is it just me?

Let’s take this outfit for example.  The coat could be from Lanvin or Miu Miu,  the dress perhaps Proenza Schouler, the shoes appear to be Azzedine Alaia and maybe the sunnies are Balenciaga?  Pretending all of that is correct, wouldn’t you sound a tad goofy if you couldn’t pronounce these designer names properly?

Let the ladies from They All Hate Us (who have created lists of the proper pronunciations) and myself help:

  • What a stunning Lon-VAUN coat you are wearing…or is that Mew-Mew?
  • You sure look cute in that Pro-EHN-za SKOO-ler dress.
  • I see you’re rockin’ those Aza-deen A-LYE-a shoes… (again).
  • Are your sunnies Bal-lin-see-AH-gah?

Maybe my gloves are from Hermès and my bag is Anya Hindmarch?  Still staying in my high-end designer fantasy world…you could say:

  • I love your AIR-mehz gloves!
  • Where did you find that Ayn-ya HEIND-march bag?

I do, at at least, know how to pronounce 3 of my fave designers; Carolina Herrera (Caro-leena Ey-reh-ra), Christian Louboutin (Kree-styan Loo-boo-tahn) and Yoshi Yamamoto (YO-jee Ya-ma-moto).

Fortunately for me, my outfit is:

  • Coat – ASOS  (AH-SOSS)
  • Dress – GAP (Gap)
  • Shoes – Nine West (Nine West)
  • Sunnies  – Chrome Hearts (Krome- Harts)
  • Gloves – Coach (Koh-ch)
  • Bag – J. Crew (Jay-Kroo)
